Favorite Gay Movies

To me, a gay film doesn't have to be overtly about same-sex relationships. Strangers on a Train has no specifically gay scene, but the lead actor, Farley Granger, was gay, and the scenes with Robert Walker just feel gay. Having said that, the vast majority of the flicks below do have same-sex themes. I know that campy films like Mommie Dearest or Valley of the Dolls are popular with gay audiences, but I've chosen to (generally) exclude those from this list. Dumbo is probably the most surprising film on this list since it's about an elephant with big ears who flies. The gay symbolism might not have been intended by the Disney creators, but much has been written about how Dumbo has the kind of outsider narrative that appeals to a gay audience. Plus there are Pink Elephants on Parade. For some reason, I've never watched Brokeback Mountain, so maybe that one would be on this list at some point in the future.
